Like you Merlin I would use a roofing square or set out the angles on a peice of ply. Its a fine exercise in Math /geometry though to work out those curves to suit the different pitches. How old does anyone you think it is?
"248,125. Lanham, W. Dec. 18, 1924. Bevels.-An instrument for finding the bevels required in cutting timber for hip and valley roofs comprises a blade B pivoted to a stock A on which is mounted a number of cams C secured together, so that the blade can be brought into contact with any one of the cams. The cams can be rotated as a whole around the centre D to adapt the instrument to roofs of different pitches."
I take my hat off to you Andy you are obviously a collector of old tools, I saw your gloat. There was a Norris plane for sale on one of the stands marked up at £250.00 If my wife had not been with me I would have bought it. I am not a collector but I do like handling good tools.
