Hi, I am planning to try and make a table lamp with a contrasting colour celtic knot on the stem. The grain on the stem obviously runs lengthways between the centres. This may be a daft question but does it matter which way the grain on the very thin inserts runs?

Thanks,
Oscar

No. Generally strips of long grain wood rather than cross cut are glued in place. Metal or plastic are used, at least in pens anyway and they have no grain.

A tip to keep the grain of the main wood aligned. Don't saw completely through it for the insert you are going to glue in. Leave a couple millimetres uncut. Glue in the insert and after the glue dries, trim off the excess and make the next cut, until all four sides are done.

and match the thickness of the strips to the kerf of the cut
