Glue!

Odd question but does anyone know what type of Gum/Glue was used on the old fashioned envelopes, the type that you licked?
I'm looking for a healthier version of contact adhesive, a 'gum' but it doesn't need to be hugely strong.

i dont know the answer to that, but what about cow gum? i remember it well from primary school.
