The Engels Coach Shop gent uses a piece of hacksaw blade with a handle attached. The effect on the glue is similar to a notched trowel used for tiling.

All I’ve ever done is a wiggly line of glue put the two bits together and slide about a bit, in effect it’s a rub joint.

Cheap silicone cooking spatulas work well, nothing sticks to them.

Ikea silicone brushes. Originally for cooking oil. Glue, when dry, just snaps off.

Also: look up "printer's brayer" - v. effective for large areas. As little as £3.50 from some online outlets.

I saw that episode and the spreader caught my eye also, for a thicker glue like PU or epoxy I think it looks good, for PVA i like something more brush like.

I use dentists wooden tongue depressors - disposable and cheaper than chips (which don't work so well anyway I imagine). Original idea from Wooden Spatula mixing sticks - 6" 150 mm - 17 mm wide

I use a silicon pastry brush, with the bristles cut short so it is all a bit more solid, pva rinses off instantly, or picks off easily when dried. Also have a few pieces of milk bottles or similar, cut into cards with a combed edge

Coffee shop wooden stirrers. Just pick up a few extra when you go in.

I buy boxes of cheap nitrile gloves - spread it on, throw ‘em away then clamp
