Flattening Construction grade Veneers

I've recently bought some construction grade Ash veneer that is about 1 1/2 mm thick. It is far from completely flat ad my first attempt at joining two pieces together and veneering to a panel was not successful. Anyone have any tips on how to get the veneer flat? Is the process the same as for regular 0.6mm thick veneers? Is using water sufficient or does using some kind of veneer softener make a difference?
