Hello all and Happy new year

I have recently attempted to cleaned up and re-stain a table. I used a smoothing plane to take the top off. Unfortunately there are large areas of tear out and now am left with a pitted surface.
Possible cause plane not sharp enough?
Any how I want to fill these pits any suggestions on the appropriate product technique would be appreciated.

It's pine with a dark stain. tried to paste in some photos but did not work.

Thanks

Have you thought about using a Thixotropic Grain Filler, this might just be the ticket. It's certainly worth a try.

It's a paste, that comes in various wood shades, which is rubbed hard into the surface using small circular motions.

Once the pores are all full rub the surplus off across the grain.

Leave overnight and apply again if necessary. The filler should be applied using Polishing Cotton or something similar.

I hope this helps

Ian

Have you considered machine sanding the top completely, you could use a hand held belt sander or even better take the top to a local cabinet maker and have it sanded on a table sander
