Hi, Seniors (& all Luddites & other non-Facebook users)

For those of my generation who do not use and cannot comprehend why Facebook exists:

I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while using the same principles. Therefore, every day I walk down the street and tell passersby what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, what I have done the night before, what I will do later, and with whom.

I give them pictures of my family, my dog, and of me gardening, taking things apart in the garage, watering the lawn, standing in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch (+ the lunch itself of course), and doing what anybody and everybody does every day.

I also listen to their conversations, give them the "thumbs up" and tell them I like them.

And it works just like Facebook. I already have five people following me:

Two police officers, a private investigator, a priest and a psychiatrist.

My friend years ago spent hours on CB radio. One night he came in and told us he'd got rid of it. When I asked why he said he decided to when he realised he'd just spent forty minutes talking to someone he'd avoid like the plague if he met in a pub.

Don't forget to tell them that if they don't give you a thumbs up in return, they'll not win the lottery, will not get a share of Bill Gates' millions, will not win a caravan and will actually catch a virus.

I am not a Facebook fan but I do think it has its place and I do use it. The thing to remember is that you can link to whoever you want and you don't even have to view what they post if you don't want to. For example I have a friend who is that classic Facebook user who is constantly putting up posts about peace and how we should be extending our table rather than our fence etc. I don't see any of that stuff now, but we are still friends and I can still message her on it. Where it is great is that I can keep in touch with friends who are future afield. I've got a mate in Aus, a few in the US and one in Switzerland and it's great for keeping in touch with them and also for my family who are more distant.

I've never used Facebook and the OP's description is the one I relate to most.

As to your message above, why can't you do all that with email?

So you have never used it but you know it's like the OPs description :?

I like it for the reasons DiscoStu mentions. Have friends and family all over the world and it's nice to have some idea of what adventures they have been up to. Yes some people post silly little things but it's interesting that you get to see another side of people that they might not show face to face. If you only get banal rubbish find some new friends haha

"Steady on" please Ladies & Gents.

My intention with the OP was not to start a dispute. It was posted purely as a joke - someone sent it to me & I thought it amusing enough to pass on here.

Personally I do not use it (or any other social media), mainly because I'm a boring old "pipper" I suppose, and I don't see the point. There are plenty of other ways to do any socialising I want to do.

But for those who do use it (that's very many apparently, including some here) if you want to use it that's fine as far as I'm concerned - it is, as they say, a free country.

The OP was just to make you grin a bit, honest! You users don't have to defend yourselves to me - or anyone else.

I actually do use FB quite a lot and it does have it's uses but I do use the 'stop watching' facility on 90% of my contacts - like DiscoStu says you can still be friends, view their board, message etc, but you don't see their daily drivel on your feed.

This. It's funny, but most of the stuff even my closest friends post is tripe. I tend to use it more as a news feed for the woodworking / tech / science pages I follow

Lots of good woodworking, woodturning groups which are a great source of ideas, inspiration and resources. I use Instagram for the same reasons. I very rarely post on both but find everyone really helpful and friendly when I do. Quite a few members of this forum post on Facebook!

Any groups you particularly recommend for scrolling? I've never used FB for hobbies.

Not being a scroller I'm a member of Woodwork & Furniture Makers Project Forum which despite its name, is more geared to modern design pieces. I'm also on Specialist Woodturning & Craft Wood Sales.
I've just had a very quick search and come up with Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts Magazine but I'm sure there will be other groups as well as individual scrollers if you have a search.
Instagram & Pinterest are really good for ideas too. No need to post if you don't want to, just treat them like customised coffee table books!
