Hi, this is my first post on the forum, so sorry if it's in the wrong place.

I'm looking to source various hardwoods to include: ebony (has to be jet black), snakewood, tiger/flame/quilted maple, coolibah, thuya burr, amboyna burr (all highly figured)

Sizes required are 18x2x2"for the ebony and approx 12x2x2"for the rest. OR half thickness in boards.

So far I've found places like timberline but they seem to be very expensive.

Could anyone point me the right direction?

Thanks

Adam

Timberline is probably your best place and his prices are fair, you will also be paying a premuim for a purer black

He has the largest stocks of Ebony that I have seen, just his ebonys would take up as much room as most of the hobby suppliers entire range of exotics.

I got some very nice genuine Macassar Ebony veneer from him the other week though it did cost me £400.

From the sizes you state you could buy turning spindles ..... look at stiles and bates or handles, but would have thought spindle blanks would be more expensive

Hi,

Thanks for your replies. I have looked into S & B and other suppliers of spindle blanks but the quality available isn't good enough for the ebony and they don't supply the other exotics.

Timberline just seems very expensive to me. If I can't find an alternative I suppose i'll have to source from there.

South London Hardwoods have some bits of Ebony around the 24x4x2 size and also some lumps of Thuya though their stock is minute compared with Timberline.

For the quilted maple take a look as some of the Guitar making specialists

I'm sure I saw some snake wood when down at Surrey Timbers a few weeks back but could be wrong, worth a try as Kevin keeps a small amount of exotics and would cut a piece of a board if need be. He does not list all he has on teh website so give him an e-mail

WL West supplied us with beech for historic machinery - I thought the stuff was very good
