80 tooth blades are what I consider to be ultra fine finish. 35-45 sounds more normal for a general purpose....

Figured I'd go for a 40 tooth (ish) Freud; however, Rutland's site says that this one:

Matt, the reasson why you are having difficulty finding a good general purpose blade is simple, there isn't one. Crosscutting solid wood is different to ripping it.
Best thing is to get a moderate quality (if cost is an issue) ripping blade with a low tooth count eg 24, 30 and a good quality crosscut with maybe 80 teeth. You should also be able to us the crosscut to cut man made boards without too much breakout

I'll second that. The teeth shapes and angles are different, just as they are on a hand saw. Any "combination" blade is a compromise, and as such will always be second best. Sae goes for sheet stock, MFC requires a different blade to plywood and different again to those for solid wood.

You'll all be relieved to hear that I ordered a DeWalt Series 60 (48 tooth) in the end. Figured it was the best balance between speed and finish.
