enlarging a disc sander

I have just acquired a 7" record disc sander. Has anyone found a source of bigger discs? As this is spare and at no cost to me, I'm thinking I could turn this into a 12" disc sander with very little effort.

Would the motor cope with the increased load without slowing down and possibly overheating?

I would guess that the motor would not be anywhere near powerful enough, I have a 12" Axminster unit and it has a 1-1/3 HP approx. (rated 243V X 4.4A) motor and it's not over powered by any means.

My 12" sand uses a large induction motor either 3/4 or 1 HP and you can still stall it if you push too hard. The type of small motors used on the smaller machines would burn out very quickly I am sure.

I've just been to check the motor.
Oh dear, another good idea shot down in flames.
Its only 120w.
