On my ongoing mission to do up the shed as cheap as possible I got some lights that were removed from a building I was working at.
I have a small fusebox in my shed. The current lighting is wired with two core. Can I safely add these to that circuit with a bit of fiddling about?
Ideally I'd like to have these over the bench area and I'll spread the existing lights around the rest of the shed. If possible I'd like them on a seperate circuit and switch.
I'll do some proper research but was after a few guidelines if possible in case I blow Hertfordshire up. Main question was will these lights be suitable, as seen in the pics, they were wired like that with red and white spare. Also do I need to connect earth for lighting?
Thanks
Chris

Its just that someone's used 5 core wire to wire them
Are you saying that your existing lighting does not have an earth?
Otherwise wire these in using the 3 cores brown/blue and green/white
As long as you can earth these lights you are ok

Ian

Check the ratings stamped on them. From the photos you've posted they look like fluorescent tubes so should be low power consumption and zero concern from a load perspective.

They look like 600 x 600 ceiling grid system lights with fluoescent tubes so Im sure itll be easy to see the power rating on each tube to arrive a total load, which wont be much. Id guess at 18watts per tube so 180 watts.

You might want to replace the tubes if they are old. I replaced the lights in the workshop and found cool white the best colour. Warm white or daylight options seemed to produce weird colour lighting.

I bought some strip lights at Liddl there was no provision for an earth. My logic was that a company the size of liddl must by definition be selling legit lights. If I need to earth it that's ok but i need to make provision for it. At the moment the lights are not earthed.Hmm. Now you have me thinking.

If the lights are double insulated by design and construction then no earth would be required. The symbol to look for is a square within a square (concentric).

Thank you guys! Wanted some info to give me a headstart and as always you came out on top. Enough to tip the balance and get me started. Thanks. I've put up and jerry rigged the other liddl lights with a connector block. Will swing past the sparks shop and get some bits and bobs this week to do it properly. The liddl lights defo have no capacity to earth so must be double earthed (thanks again Dee J). Put my mind at rest.
Took a better look at the reclaimed lights. They need earthing as you're quite right to point out Ian. (Thanks :D ). Couldn't put these up as I need some battens to bodge it but have worked out how to do so I think. Just need to rig in sequence I think, install a new 2 gang switch and I should be good to go. They look in good order and I've found an online supplier for the cool white (thanks Robin ) 14w tubes. All in all. Good job done. Well, nearly done.

Mind you, I now have a Star Wars Shed. Half dark side half light side. :D *makes lightsabre noises in head.

Cheers guys
Chris
