They both say they filter "down to 1 micron", but that has a bit of a ring of marketing speak to me. So before I bought either I'd ask what percentage of 1 micron particles they take out of the air. My suspicion is that they don't say this because the percentage may not be that impressive sounding. I would expect them to know this information as the filter inside it should have some sort of rating.

Even if the percentage retained in the filter is less than you would like, if the size of the filter is standard you could get one and have a look at buying a replacement filter with a better rating.

I just took delivery of a Jet AFS-500. It's much bigger than I believed from the illustration on Axi's site! Oh well, I could suspend it from the ceiling I suppose!

If you scroll down on this page: "2012: Record have revised their claims in relation to the AC400 after further questions. They now say the outer filter removes 98% of all particles from 1 to 5 microns and the inner removes 85% of particles below 1 micron"

So seems pretty good to me.

I agree, that does indeed sound very good. I think they are silly not to mention it to show grumpy old cynics that some companies aren't run by the snake oil salesmen!

Agreed, I would have though there was some kind of filter specification they could quote. Will have a measure up in the shed to see if I can accommodate the beast!

I think it obvious that both of these machines came from the same factory. Also that the machine is a generic product offered by the Chinese at a low price. Record charges much more than Rutlands. The 5 yr guarantee is all of the risk on Record BUT you are paying for that with the much higher prices.

The ultimate issue is that people are now so far removed from manufacturing that you have no idea of the ex-factory costs of anything. eg Furniture Village Oak stuff made from offcuts and sold for expensive prices.

I would buy the Rutlands one, I would expect it to last me at least 5 yrs, the most expensive part being the motor and if necessary I could replace the motor and fan more cheaply than buying a new device.

There was a problem with circuit boards overheating on the Record units built in 2013. Record were offering repairs/circuit boards in 2014 to address the problem. I wonder if Rutlands would be able to supply replacement parts a year or two down the line if required though?

I bought the Rutlands model a few weeks ago. It's very quiet (certainly compared to running any tool in the shop). The Record model looks to have a slightly better design with an additional clip to hold in the external filter.

Whilst I'm going to keep the filters, I'm planning on mounting it such that it ejects the air through a vent out of my workshop. My 'shop is so open/full of holes that it'll easily draw in air from the other, erm, "ventilation points", and it'll make the issue of filtration efficiency somewhat moot.

That said, I've been running it on medium for a couple of hours after leaving the workshop whenever I've kicked up a bit of dust, and I do feel it's helped (less of a dust "smell" when I return the next morning, if that makes sense). I'm not noticing much/any visible dust on the filter (contrary to some other reviews I've seen) but then I do try to capture/extract most dust at source.

So far, I'm pretty happy with it.

EDIT: Some info in this thread lead me to http://tmcwoodworks.blogspot.co.uk/2015 ... .html#more, so I decided to take a look to see the PCB in my Rutlands unit. Unfortunately the case does seem quite different, and despite getting a fair bit of it apart it looks as though some parts of the plastic panels clip into one another, and would have required more brute-force-and-ignorance to get apart than I was willing to attempt this evening.
