Just managed to save some huge lumps of laburnum and cherry from the fire.
Whilst on my way back from work I noticed a tree surgeons truck on a site thats being cleared for housing, luckily they had only burnt the branches from the Cherry and laburnum trees.
I spoke to the guys and explained to them that I could make good use of the logs for woodturning. They were more than happy to let me have what I wanted and even helped me load the truck ( Good blokes these Black Country lads  )

So next time you see tree surgeons working, don't be shy, go ask........the worst they can say is "NO !! **** OFF

Here's some pics of what's going to the fire.

Well done that Man, been turning some Laburnum today and sadly looking at my dwindling supply.

Don't often get pieces that big to play with, hope you can make the most of it.

Get those ends sealed ASAP if not already done, I've had Cherry start to split on the ends whilst away for a coffee break.

well done dean, you're gonna have fun with that little lot! on the thread of talking to tree surgeons, if anyone sees tree surgeons working it is always worth a chat to them to see what they may have cos i can say from personal xperiance ( i used to be a tree surgeon for ten yrs) that they will always let you have some, or even all of what they have, hell for a couple of quid we used to drive miles to a persons address to drop the stuff off!

Worro again Dean.
Got some bostin pieces there mukka.
Make the most of them.
I've asked once when they were trimming the trees round by us last year, and was told that they couldn't give me none.It just all got turned into chippings

Thanks for all replies.
Been having a bash at the laburnum, cherry and another piece which I think could be maple :? , I'm sure someone here could ID it.
Went past same site today and managed to beg two more pieces of laburnum and another great lump of Cherry :)
I'm going to have to resist cutting any more with the chain saw due to the amount of waste
Looks like I'll have to find a wood yard with machinery that will cope with lumps this big, I've only got chop saw and chain saw

Anyway, here are some pics of the wet turning from this weeks haul

Thanks chas, do you think I should seal one side so they don't dry to quickly or do you have any suggestions to reduce the risk of defects.

At the very least I would wrap the backs with several layers of newspaper, leave the centres open.

If they were mine I would meths soak or boil before wrapping.

On the basis that you probably don't have enough meths I would suggest boiling, about an hour (just simmering) or 20mins in pressure cooker.

Leave to drain/dry off excess moisture before wrapping.

Wrap as per the meths method, store inverted indoors with air space below, (prop on wire mesh or a couple of sticks) should be dried 18-21 days max.

If you can't get round to treating/wrapping immediately, put them in a sealed plastic bag or wrap in cling film to keep moisture in until you can.

lovely colors there, fingers crossed they dont do nasty things, like split!

Yep, fingers crossed :)
If nasty things do happen it has only cost a bit of my time, which is worth paying for the lesson learnt
