I was given a piece of timber yesterday
the giver knows I like a bit of wood...who does't?
the recipient....me....says thankyou...sometimes you need to be polite
now this lump is 24"x8"x4" and I think is lead lined
it looks like oak but 3-4 times the weight I would expect
it has so many shakes that it does not deserve to be in 1 piece
I cannot bring myself to just burning it and despite the shakes I reckon it would stay solid longer than I will live

what the pineapple would you do with it, without causing offence?

in those dimensions, it sounds a bit like a part of a new sleeper.

cross cut a couple of pieces off it, to make a simple |_____| (but the other way up), stand a plant on it, job done.

Drill a few holes stuff tea lights in and sell it to a hipster.

I had a very similar experience when some one popped into my workshop all smiles saying do you want a piece of a 300 year old ship. I say yes please and they drag this lump of timber that looked a lot like a sleeper. The lad looked so pleased with his self I didn't have the heart to say what it was. He said he had bought a ships wheel which was attached to this 'sleeper'.

some good ideas
i will use it for something
be good to hear of other peoples experiences

i have decided it is just an oak sleeper but damn heavy
on a plus side i was given some 45mm gluelam type boards today (same supplier)
so i may re-do my workshop floor with them...will have to get a few more as my van could not take any more weight
