I came across yesterday something I'd not thought of or heard of before.....a Trend calibrated setting disc for your table Saw that they also claim can be used as a sanding disc by sticking sanding paper to it. In essence your replace your blade with the disc, set the angle, and then swap over to the Saw blade again. I can't see the benefit of the disc for setting a Saw, but it got me wondering about using the table Saw for sanding........so.........an old blade........an angle grinder.......a file........a disc of sand paper attached.....and.......well darn me, it works and is actually brilliant.

Down draft and crown guard extraction reduced dust to a minimum. Zero insert to stop things and fingers getting trapped, or alternatively a slight gap to allow for angling the disc. Nice flat surface and the ability to use a mitre gauge.

All,I can say, is that if you haven't a disc sander it's definitely worth considering.......just make sure that if you use a saw blade then any sign of the teeth are removed to create a completely round edge. Alternatively buy the trend setting disc!

This idea has been around since Moses was a youngster and seems to disappear and resurface every couple of decades!

I think the rotation of a table saw is way too fast for good sanding. Would result in a lot of burn marks. In fact a lot of disc sanders are too fast also. My go to sander is a 9'' MDF disc I mount on my lathe at it's slowest speed.

I was given a carp "table saw shaped object" a few months back and accepted it with the intention of doing just this with it. For the speed might there be a way with some trickery and a clever fellow (Eriktheviking) to alter this?

To be honest though I doubt I'd use it for fine working anyway, just truing up cuts or mitres so if the speed that much of a deal?
