Possibly for the first coat, just a splash of white spirit.

For oak etc you can use a scotchbrite pad to make a pore filling slurry.

Could you expand on that a bit please Pete if you wouldn't mind? It sounds interesting (and cheap :D ) Not sure how far I'd get googling it...

Which bit?

If it’s the scotchbrite pad bit just apply the oil and rub with the grain, then wipe off the excess.

Ok. Thanks for the reply Pete. It's not something I would have thought of but it makes sense seeing how green pads wear especially on something relatively rough like wood. Much appreciated, I'll remember that one.
