I think that was an initiative by Nick Gibbs and British Woodworking magazine. Nick posts on here so if you PM him he might be able to help.

Cheers

There are several books on plane making, of which 'Making and Modifying Woodworking Tools' by Jim Kingshott is a good example. ( www.abebooks.co.uk should source a copy.) Jim Krenov's method of making planes is well described in 'The Fine Art of Cabinetmaking'. Bob Wearing's book 'The Resourceful Woodworker' has another method.

You could make some very good planes for the cost of an iron (tip - the thicker the better) and some decent timber (turning blanks would be a good source of small quantities). Most British planes are traditionally of beech, but the harder tropical timbers make very good planes, too.

cool thanks for that. have e mailed nick

also any advice on irons? ...... just any iron or any specific iron for a particular plane ?

The other option might be to have a look under 'Plane Irons' on Ebay, and see if there's something that suits your ideas.

(P.S. - if you go for a book, get the Krenov one first. His planes are the simplest to make, being made of a front block, a back block and two sides glued together, with a wedge block in the gap, and a wedge to hold the blade in place. Simple they may be, but they can be made to work very well indeed.)
