Hi all

I hope somebody can help.

I am new to woodworking and I have been given a piece of mahogany that is 5 inches thick and 10 inches wide. It is an old mantel and is 5'6 inches long.

I need to cut it down into 2 foot lengths but do not have access access to a table saw. Would anybody have any ideas on what would be the best hand saw to use to to do this.

It weighs a bloody ton and sounds like an iron girder when you tap it.

Thanks

Ged

hardpoint saw from somebody like bahco- available from the sheds. By the time you have found the perfect saw to do it, you could have done the job.

or possibly a chainsaw if you have one- it is almost the size of a sleeper in cross section.

Cheers Macros. off to B&Q I go.

Just about any sharp cross cut saw will do the job, cheap saws from the big sheds will suffice. I'am assumming that the cut surface will not be your final finish ?. If you plan to do more woodwork in the future then it may be wise to invest in a decent quality saw.

I also need it slicing to 2.5 inches thick so I might take it into my local college and see if they will do it on their bandsaw when I have cut it down.

Cheers

shame you are not nearer- it would be a good test of my new bandsaw
