I bought these couple because they looked interesting. They are user made, but must have been my somebody with a fair bit of metalworking skill. I like craftsman made items like this- they tend to work very well and have the benefit of improvements over the purchased ones as the maker saw fit.

One has a piece of eclipse hacksaw blade as a blade- I assume the other one does too. They have clearly taken some time to make.

So a few questions:

What is a shoulder plane called where the blade doesn't extend beyond the sides? It is a bit of a limiting feature really but it is what it is.
What is the purpose of a compassed shoulder plane- the radius is very slight?
 
Odd; the peculiar (and large) set of techniques, equipment and materials needed to make those speaks (to me) of a technical college project.
