Hello All,

I know this has been done to death, but opinions change

I'm looking for a jointer / planer to go with my thickneser. but I'm struggling to decide which is suitable?

The 3 I'm looking at are as follows......

http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-Axmi ... 370404.htm but this looks like it will eat space, and it's also big bucks

http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-Axmi ... -21722.htm This looks a bit feeble to me, but I have no experience of it, has anyone ever done a table length modification ie extended length ?

http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Power+T ... 966/p22059 This is 42kg  but not sure if it's any good? I know the table saw gets much praise, I wondered if it would extend to their other machines ?

This is my final machine purchase, so I want to make the right choice, any advice will be welcomed

I've not ruled out selling the Thicknesser and buying a combi, but £600 is the limit.

Cheers

Jed

I had a CT150 it was good, my main grip was that it was so low to the ground in terms of height compared to my AW102PT Planer Thicknesser. It was very quite and left a nice finish. I sold it because 6" capacity was to little for me, its fine for making large boards but if you want a board say 8 inches or so for a solid panel front it to small.

I'd say a better bet would be this fox copy of the Axminster model at £311 but with 8" capacity. Will be the same as the CT150 but with a diffrent badge.

Out of stock at the moment so might be worth a ring to ask if they plan to have more in.

Its here to but no price:

Out of the 3 machines you mention, IMHO unless you are working with small pieces of timber the Axminster CT1502 is your only choice. The other two are just over 2 feet long, and while you could make some sort of extension table I do not think you will be happy with it for long.
I had the cast iron Ryobi (still have it some where ) version and although as I have said they are alright for small pieces of timber, I believe that you will soon regret not buying the 1502.

What about going the secondhand route? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/JET-60A-SURFACE-P ... 500wt_1182 If this went within your price range you would be buying an excellent machine and it is 8" wide (I have the 6" Jet/Axminster 54A). These machines have the best dust extraction that I have come across.

It does not say if this is a single or 3 phase machine http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WILSON-SURFACE-PL ... 500wt_1182

but again if it fell within your price range, and is single phase you would have one hell of a machine, which would see you and the rest of us out.

I know that this is a planer/thicknesser but there is nothing wrong with having a spare cast iron thicknesser. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Lurem-planer-thic ... 500wt_1182

Or what about a single phase Wadkin http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/surface-planer-jo ... 124wt_1165

There is also a £300 buy it now single phase Wadkin which after a bit of a clean up would again be a great machine.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Wadkin-9-Surface- ... 500wt_1182

A Scheppach P/T in very good nick. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SCHEPPACH-HMS-260 ... 500wt_1182

Or if you really want to go for the SIP, here it is much cheaper (£100 off) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SIP-bench-planer_ ... 500wt_1182 But I would'nt

EDIT: I have just noticed the link Chems left and I have to say for the money it seems an excellent buy considering it is all cast iron.

Good luck

Mike

I've had the little SIP for a few years and it is very good. It has its limitations due to it's size as mentioned above, but it is described as a bench top machine.

It incorporates a waste blower and when connected to my dust extraction pipework it blows hard enough to inflate the filter bags 6 metres away without the extractor running!

A friend has the Rexon of the same sort of size and it is a lot lighter in construction but finds it good too.

The SIP got good reviews in the mags.

Dave.
