I made this coal yard for my mum's Hornby train set. All to scale...

where the coal carriage is stood is where the track would be...

The 'office' is made from MDF then veneered with walnut veneer to give the effect of it being a wooden hut type office.
The coal in the bunkers is polystyrene painted

not very taxing as a wood work job but enjoyable
 
Looks good. It reminds me of my late brother in laws layout ideas, he used to bring bucket loads of sawdust home from work, PVA was applied to different surfaces then covered in the sawdust, this was then painted green for fields, or he would paint on a smooth coat of PVA then apply more PVA to form ridges, the sawdust was then sprinkled on and painted brown to look like ploughed fields! I don't think he had a coal yard though, I'm sure your mum will be well pleased.
