I've got an Axminster wood turning chuck that I'd like to take apart to give it a good clean. Anyone done this? I've downloaded the manual for the Clubman which is similar and there's nothing about taking it apart. I've taken apart and cleaned the chuck from my metalworking lathe and also done the same with the Jacobs chuck from my bench drill but I can't see how this wood turning chuck comes apart!

I didn't remove it in the end but the scroll seems to be held in with one or more springs and has at least one detent.
The scroll pushes out from the front but as it wasn't too dirty in the end I decided not to risk loosing any small bits.
Still interested in any pictures or drawings of the assembly if anyone has one though.

Which chuck do you have? If it's the woodturners chuck you remove the screws from the back and it should all come apart but as you say, look out for the springs and steel balls!

Most Axminster products have manuals that can be downloaded from their website.

hi woodpig
you wont have any problems with the axminster chucks , its slightly easier if you remove the jaw carriers first but doesnt matter if you dont .
the only things i was worried about losing (because they are so small ) was the screw that retains the socket for the chuck key , on the precision 100mm chuck , so i just screwed them back into the body after removing the socket - i have recently dismantled my 3 axminster chucks to give them a good clean and also done 8 of the chucks from the woodturning class i go to.

i had no problems with any of them they are all straightforward to do - i just soaked them in parafin and give them a good clean with a brush in the parafin - then reassembled them with a light oiling/greasing in the scroll.

best of luck

Thanks guys, it's all back together now so maybe another time.
I'm not sure exactly which chuck it is but its 100 dia and has a removable threaded insert for different lathe spindles.
I've probably had it for 8-10 years. I did download one of the manuals from Axminster but it didn't show all the parts.
