I have just used this for the first time, managed to get a half decent finish which I am sure I will improve on in time once I get use to it.#

I have some questions when you first use it it says that you will lose a little from the mops would you call this a little(or about normal lose)

That is from all three of them not just one.

And secondly how often do you apply the different compounds to the wheels when polishing a single bowl of about 9" diameter

That's less than I remember losing. Personally I apply the compounds just once u less it is a huge piece. Maybe Chas will be along in a bit as he is the expert on the system.

They soon settle down and you lose very little after the initial spin up. I clean my tripoli wheel pretty often with a bit of steel (in much the same manner as you would use a scraper) as I find the compound seems to harden after a bit and becomes less effective, this cleaning causes very little loss, just dust and a few fibres.

Quite surprised you shed that amount on a single piece, what were you buffing did it have any particularly sharp edges etc.
But it should not be a problem unless you continue to get significant shedding from now on.
My original mops are still going strong after first being exposed to public view in 2009

The Pamphlet (PDF, double sided on A4)may be of some use.
As Pete says a light colouring of the abrasive before each job should be enough unless you get a particularly stubborn spot you need to work on.
After a while there will probably enough compound on the mops to do small items without needing any extra dressing. Keep the compound to a minimum and clean it off as Kim says if it gets too dense with a rough sawn stick or similar. *

KimG's buffing of coloured items pamphlet linked on my site may also give you some pointers.

* if you should manage to get the mops too dirty or contaminated by picking up uncured oil or touching metal by mistake they can be washed in washing detergent, spin them up on the small mandrel in an electric hand drill to dump the baulk of the water.

Thank you all looks like I am putting just about the right amount on the mops(I did read CHJ how to from the help section first).
The bowl I used it on was this one HERE
