The local Bloodwise group (blood cancer support) is considering running some sort of off-road cycling event to raise funds and I've been "volunteered" to see what it might entail. There seem to be quite a lot of cyclists on here, so wondered if anyone has done this sort of thing and had any hints/tips/awful warnings? We've got lots of potential off-road sites here, ranging from old railway lines to some seriously 'ard stuff at Pitfichie.
Any thoughts or comments greatly welcomed.

Hi Dickm,

The cycle club I belong to had an aborted attempt at running a mountain bike race a few years ago and I remember one of the expenses that we had not fully considered at the time was that typically when running a road event, we have a maximum field of 80 riders so we only had race numbers up to 80 but, for the MTB race, it was anticipated that we would need well over a hundred so we got quotes for a new set of numbers to be created and the cost was frightening, can't remember the exact costs as it was quite a few years ago but i do remember that it caused quite a stir and was ultimately one of the reasons why we abandoned the idea as the overall costs of running the event became prohibitive.

Cheers, John

I've done them but never organised one. Perhaps join your local CTC, and look at Audax UK. They are both keen on encouraging cycling. Your local authority might help too.

You should switch to an alpha numeric format ie 0-9 and A-Z.
