Has anyone on this Forum tried the CBN 150 mm COARSE GRIT WHEEL ,for Shapening Woodturning Tools?I have a 6 inch Grinder with a Fine Grit CBN Wheel, for Sharpening, but I have since acquired a Tormek T7 System, but ,as everyone knows ,they are awful slow at quick removal of steel for shapening,So,I bought the Tormek Kit that you can use on a fast Grinder,ie, so you can use the Tormek Jigs on the Grinder for fast Shapening ,then move over too your Tormek T7 for the Final Edge. For quick Shapening of the Wood Turning tools ,I am caught between putting on a Coarse Grit CBN Wheel ,costing around £140,or, buy a Robert Sorbey Pro-Edge System, which I have been told ,with a Coarse Ceramic Belt ,is very fast at Steel removal, with no problem of over-heating? Any help would be appreciated.

Yours Kindly Paul

Derek Cohen has written at length about CBN wheels.

I can't post links, but I'm sure someone (or the man himself) will come along and help.

Not had any experience of CBN in home workshop but have a comment regarding using any other wheel or belt system in conjunction with the tormek.
Unless the wheel is the same diameter as the tormek then there is still a fair amount of material to be adjusted before you are in the realms of the tormek 'touch and turn ' ballpark.

If you are set on using the tormek for turning gouges I personally can't see any benefit from anything other than a white oxide wheel for basic change of profile. CBN is a very expensive way of saving 2 or 3 minutes.

As a general woodworker and metalworker I find a CBN wheel invaluable and very long-term economic but it's probably not so for those who've already invested in a Tormeck which I know are very capable but also very expensive.

I use two twin wheel grinders (one is slow speed) fitted with a mixture of 8” and 6” grinding wheels, white, green, blue and CBN. Plus I have a SIP Belt/Disc machine ( http://tinyurl.com/kldolxj ) fitted with Zirconia fine grits (my most used grinding machine). I also have a 12” Axminster disc sander with a variety of Velcro backed discs.

All this has accumulated over the years and starting from scratch I'm sure I'd not buy this many machines just to do a bit of sharpening. :)
