Hello

I wonder if anyone can give us some advice on which capacitor would be suitable for the motor on our small woodworking lathe?

Unfortuanatley we cannot locate a manufacturers name on the lathe and do not have the original capacitor but we do have the details from the plate on the motor.

The motor will turn when powered up but requires turning manually to get it going.

We have two terminals to connect to the capacitor.

The motor appears to have been made in Poland and the details on the plate are:

Dystrybutor
PHP “ PRZYMIERZE”
Silnlk = 1
KW = 0.55
Type = SEg65 – 4a
A= 4.06
Min = 1420
Praca = s1
Cos ∅ = 0.83
40°C
IP54
240v 50 Hz
16 μF / 450v
PN – 88/E – 06/01

Any help would be much appreciated.

there are start capacitors and run capacitors make sure you ger the correct one

A Run rated capacitor will be slightly larger in form and may present a little problem if fitting in an enclosed cover.

However:-

If in doubt always fit a Run Rated Capacitor that can carry the current continually without overheating.

Hello

Thanks very much for your reply.
Is there anyway from the information i have i can work out if its a start capacitor or a run capacitor i need?

Hello CHJ

Thanks for your reply and for the advice it is appreciated.

I will get a 16 μF / 450v run rated capacitor as there is plenty of space for the dimensions given for the capacitor.

Thanks again

I fitted an new capacitor to my ELU DB180b lathe which had the same problem and it now starts fine. I now have a problem that the off switch has stopped working so the lathe keeps running until switched off at the plug. This was an intermittent fault but has now become permanent.
I have put an NVR switch with a normal socket in place which now acts as the on off switch. Any ideas which part of the electrics has caused the problem? My knowledge of electrics is very limited.

From what you say - the problem was that your on/off switch had failed in the 'ON' position. I am not sure whether that was the question that you were asking or that you still have a problem with the NVR switch.

Give Haydock convertors a ring they have quite a stock and are very knowledgeable with all types of capacitors

Update on my switch problem.
I was doing a bit of work on a bowl yesterday and when I tried to turn the lathe on at the NVR switch nothing happened. I pushed the on switch on the actual lathe and it started ok and seemed to turn on an off as it should do. However, a few minutes later I turned it off to check the wall thickness of the bowl and now the lathe will not start no matter what I try.

Luckily I was watching another lathe for sale on EBay and 10 minutes later I was the new owner of a Draper WTL90 Variable speed lathe which I have picked up today. Although an old model it looks almost brand new and seems very well made and solid.
