I had some problems with tear out on a cherry coffee table I made recently. I thought that a scraper plane may be the answer so kept an eye on eBay as didn't want to pay a fortune if it didn't work.

I eventually found one for £10 with £5 postage.

Arrived yesterday and this evening after work shot out into workshop. Cleaned it up, used a burnisher to creat a hook on each side of the blade and gave it a try on a scrap of oak.

I thought it may be a bit of a steep learning curve. Well I needn't have worried, it cut beautifully with wispy shavings like a plane would produce from the first try. The only thing I did find was the tendency to scoop the board as it was hard to get it to cut at the beginning and the end of the stroke.

I think with a little practice I will probably use it quite a bit.

Well worth £15.

They are handy things that's for sure.
I can't remember who has an infill scraper plane, I think it's Pete.

A scraper plane is a must have in my books.

i have the Lie Nielsen version (it was a birthday present from myself...) and love the little thing. found all sort of uses for it, and love the balance of it on the hand. i prefer it to my 112 actually.

I found that a Hock blade for my 80 made a huge improvement in performance.

Very useful tool.

The large scraper plane is wonderful for veneered table tops and easier to use, (at start and finish of stroke) due to length of sole.

You could scrape one of those 8 x 8s to the size you want.

2 of them now used for lathe bench

2 left...maybe a start for pergola

7 x4 foot lengths left
and if the weather persists they will be keeping us warm :D

Use it or sell it. I was sceptical but it's easy to get a really good finish.
