I found a number of handsaws this summer. I now plan to clean them up and sharpen them.

I'm interested in hearing what these saws really are. :) I think the smaller saws will be useful, but am interested in learning more about all of them.

The saws are (see pictures):
1. Stanley "gigantic backsaw" , marked "28 x 5 U.S.A.". about 65 cm long! Anyone know what this was used for?
2. "Sandvikens Jernverks No 308" 45 cm long, 10.5 cm wide, about 10 ppi - tenon saw?
3. "Sandvikens Jernverks No 308" 35 cm long, 8.5 cm wide, about 10 ppi - carcase saw?
4. Strindberg & Bjorck No 314 - veneer saw?

I think they are all crosscut saws, but I'll have to take a closer look to be certain.

I'm thinking of filing the tenon saw (no 2) to a rip cut instead.

Here's all four. You see the different sizes..

Any information about these saws are appreciated. All I know is that three of them are Swedish saws, and my guess about what kind of saws they are.

#4 looks very much like a floorboard saw. The shape is still used in modern hardpoint saws with the same function. Try googling "floorboard saw". What is it - about 10/12 tpi and 300mm long?

Agree about the floorboard saw...teeth on the bow an' all!

None are of much age but the Swedish steel ones are fine saws...as is all steel from Sweden in my opinion.

Nice finds...quite rare in the UK methinks.

Thanks! That seems to be what they are. Now I'll just have to find an old mitre box for the large saw. :)
