Have only had scroll saw 2 months and cut around 12 small items out of 6mm ply how do you know when to replace blades and were and what are the best blades to buy

Many on here use blades supplied by Mike in the US. Just can't put my finger on his web. at the moment, but I'm sure someone will put that right before long .

Welcome to the forum , hope you enjoy your time on here .

The blades can dull quite quickly.
Usually a blade lasts around 20-30 minutes but can last longer on thinner wood.
When a blade is getting blunt, you will feel that you are having to put more pressure on the wood to get it to cut.
It may also change colour.
Very little pressure should be applied to the wood, it should almost cut itself with you just steering (if that makes sense)

As for blades, there are lots of places that sell them.
Axminster, Always hobbies, etc.

Popular brands are Niqua/Flying Dutchman, Olsen and Pegas.
A lot of people favour Niqua/FD but I find they cut too slow for me.
I use Pegas. They are quite aggressive but still give a clean cut.

I presume you are using plain blade?

If not, I don't know/use pinned blades so can't help.

Hope this helps

Artinmay welcome aboard, you have just found the place to get advice for this great hobby that we enjoy. The address for [email protected] the home of Flying Dutchman blades. It will take you a little time to know which blade to use for the wood you are cutting.I am still learning at 75,and enjoying every cut that I do.If I could have one blade it would have to be No 3 reverse. You will try many blades as you progress and will be able in time to see which blade you prefer.I would suggest that you only buy a dozen at a time to begin with.

Hi Artnimay and welcome.

As with Ben’s post, you will soon get the feel of when a blades require changing, with some hard woods, this can be after only a few minuets of cutting.

I purchase all of my blades from Hegner, this is not because I have a Hegner saw, but because I find their price is competitive when you purchase a gross or more at a time. You my think at this time that a gross is a lot, but if you get into cutting a lot, and you will, as scroll sawing is addictive then purchasing blades by the gross is the way to go.
The blades I use are Niqua, have done for many years and for most cutting, I use 3, 5 and 7, reverse tooth.

Take care and enjoy your scroll sawing.

Blade selection is down to the choice of wood, and will be achieved with practice. My popular blade choice is a No 3 Reverse, which will do most of the work that I am doing at the moment.
