Hi all, I have to replace a couple of old chisels, I own a few Sorbys currently which are good but pricey.... any offers on the go for something of similar quality but a lower price?

Ebay look out for old Stanley and Marples with blue handles, but best of the lot (as good as any of the "posh" ones) are the black handled Stanley 5001s. They often aren't flagged up as such (the inscriptions are no longer readable) but look out for this sort of thing

High quality AND cheap? Vintage from Ebay or car-boot sales. There's a huge selection; boxwood handled, London pattern handles, plastic handles, no handles, cast steel, modern steels, fine bevelled-edged, firmers, registered firmers - take your pick!

Of new chisels - depends what you want of them. If you're doing fine cabinetmaking with lots of dovetails, Ashley Iles are the best value fine-landed bevel-edged chisels on the market. If you only cut a dovetail once every Preston Guild, then almost anything will serve, provided it has a handle that suits you. It's hard to find chisels with really bad steel these days, unless you're particularly unlucky. The Marples splitproof handled ones get good reviews, and are available pretty well everywhere.

Thanks for the helpful replies, like the look and the price of the Narex brand and the Iles are about 30% cheaper than Sorby, two good options there.
