Hi All

I have a design idea in mind which would mean bending a piece of white oak.
The piece will be about 8" long, 6" high and 3/4" thick. in my head I'd like the grain to run vertical but also need the piece to be almost semi-circular, is it all possible to steam such a piece as I really don't want to laminate. My other thought was just to cut it out of a bigger piece on the band saw but I really would like to keep the face grain in one run which is why I don't want to laminate if at all possible.
Cheers
Kevin

Turn it on a lathe. If turned from a log the grain will be the same all around unless your looking for a quarter sawn figure all around. to do that you'll need to wrap it with veneer.

Hi Kevin,
It would help to have a few more details:-
Will it be structural/cosmetic?
Will it be totally on view?
Will the ends be visible?
I take it that you have the piece of oak, in which case you could cut cut it into lengthwise staves and reassemble it a la barrel. If you minimise the cutting width, the joints will be barely noticeable but they would be evident on the ends.
