I saw a bee in uk today
is it a bit early?
damn thing was nearly an inch long

At an inch long, does not sound like it was a bee - hornet?

Jan is a little early, but with the temperature about 8-10 degrees it does not surprise me. A few years ago, in the first week of Feb I got a bee caught in my glasses and stung my eyelid. I was checking the entrance to the hive at the time, without a suit on. #-o

Probably a bumble/ground bee - too large and wrong season for a honey bee.

Bumble bee. Probably nests in a hole in the ground, just warm enough for a trip out foraging. You could offer it a little sugar water if it's still around.

A bumblebee - there are 25 species of them in this Country. 250+ species of bee altogether.

A queen bumble bee. They are the only ones around this time of year. All the drones and workers die off at the end of the previous summer and the queens hibernate.

Got followed around by what seemed to be a bog standard honey bee today near Bognor. I think it thought my hi-viz was a tasty flower.
