Bargain Timber Panel

I picked this timber panel up yesterday, for the extortionate price of £6.00! A few hours with a table saw and sander should result in some very nice usable timber.

I thought it was oak when I first glanced at it, but I'm not 100% sure now. Possibly Walnut?

looks the wrong colour for walnut, dont think its oak either. dodge will know

Am I better to remove the finish on the front of the panel timbers prior to putting it through a planer?
