Hi,

New to UKWorkshop, but I'm working on a large oak beam end to turn into a base for a dining table and need it cut down at either end. I was hoping somebody might be able to help in that respect with a bandsaw, as it's 35 x 35 x 100(ish) cm, so needs quite a large one to accommodate it.

Thanks in advance, and apologies if this is in the wrong forum :?

Russ.

Thanks Duncan, I was hoping 18" would be big enough. Have considered chainsaw as a last resort... :-(

Max depth of cut of my bandsaw is 30cm, not directly related to the wheel size - which is 18" as suggested by Marcros.

A bigger bandsaw would be nice but it's already rather big for my workshop!

Russ - good luck with your piece of oak.

Duncan

If I read you right then you're cross cutting to square up each end. It's thirty minutes hard work but not impossibly arduous, I'd use a handsaw.

What you've got to avoid is the temptation to abandon accuracy in favour of all out exertion, you should chalk out the cut line and then stick to it!

Good luck.

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies, just to let you know it was chainsawed in the end, not a bad job, then chiselled and sanded to get levelled off. Pic attached, just getting tabletop made in glass and a stainless, bespoke bolt made and should all be good to go :)
