Back to Basics - I can't saw straight

I can't get on with the short fence. I do understand what it's all about but it just doesn't seem to work in practise. It's much more preferable to me to use a long fence. I haven't had the merest suggestion of kickback so far and stand well out of the line of fire anyway.
