I found this axe head in amongst some tools from a barn clearance last week. It looks very early and is obviously hand made.
I've tried to google a reference for makers / foundry marks on axe heads with no luck.
I'm wondering if there Is there a printed reference to these marks and if so, does anyone have a copy that they can look at for me.
I'm guessing that the presence of a stamped crown would indicate that it possibly has a military connection (pre WD broad arrow stamp) as I believe the use of a crown as a trade mark would have been strictly controlled at this time.
Any help or theories gladly accepted
Thanks
Rob

William Swift. Well known in the edge tool world.
Google is your friend, lots of info to be found, I think the crown is part of the trademark.

Well done that man!!
Thanks for the quick reply, now that I have a name for the initials, Google does indeed supply all I need to know.
Thanks again
