Hello would anyone be able to answer my question?
I have a friend who needs some orientated strand board that needs cutting into smaller bits. Would my scrollsaw be able to do it? I have thick wood blades and its a proxon. I'm a bit worried the glue used in the boards might be too much for it. I don't want to break it!
Thanks
Alice

If the board's thickness is within the saw's normal cutting capacity then you should be able to cut it. My concern would be that the strands could easily flake off or splinter whilst being cut because, unlike plywood, they have little support from the other strands. Definitely don't use blades with reverse teeth!

I'd be more inclined to use a band saw if one is available.

how small do the bits need to be and how many of them are there?

What quick replies! Thanks guys. I love this website :D

They are 1 inch thick. There's quite a lot of bits, but its all just straight lines. It's for his class at school. They are making hedgehog houses apparently!

Unfortunately i don't have a bandsaw. I wish I did. Would the worst that can happen is that I'd just snap a couple of blades? don't want it to blow up!

Oh and would anyone be able to recommend which blade would be best if i'm going to attempt this?

i wouldn't attempt it. get somebody with a table saw to do so, and it will take them no time at all. i would do so, but i have sold my table saw and it will be gone at the weekend. if you re still stuck when i get my bandsaw set up next week, give me a shout, i am in kirkstall.

has it been bought yet- could the supplier do it?

Ok I will follow that advice. He will have return them to B & Q!!

What a very kind offer :) I think he needs them by monday though.

just starting out on the woodworking front really. I'm trying my best not to break too many machines!

Thanks a bundle
(ps used to live in kirkstall - lovely place!)

if he returns them to b and q, then buys them from b and q, he will probably get a number of cuts done free which is one option.

where are you, where is the osb? if it can be done one evening, we can maybe have a chance of doing it on my saw.

Thanks but we are quite far away from kirkstall. He's got some mdf which I know i can cut easily instead (with my mask of cousre). i know it's not the best thing for a hedgehog house but least it'll last a bit longer than cardboard!

There's probably not enough time now, perhaps change the lesson content? He could approach flooring companies for some off-cuts. They probably take bits of 3/4" oak home to burn on the fire.
