For inside measurements--such as fitting a door--they are indispensable. Mine is an eight footer--roughly 2.4 meters--and that's pretty rare here in the States. As a matter of fact, when it's used up, I'll retire.
 
I preferred them years ago, but, I had a disaster using one once, I laid out the measurement on the underside of a worktop, and being near dusk and just staring to rain,(Iwas outside), managed to fit the cutting batten to the wrong mark, so being a metre short it cost me another top, not good practice.
