+ 1 for Novatech. I got the bare bones machine and added Linux (Peppermint 9 now). It has worked well for 4 years and I am happy. I will possibly buy again with a SSD as it is just a laptop, the other machine is a Samsung that my grandson uses for games etc. with Win 10.
I like being able to specify what I want and it is delivered as I want it.

Not sure if it can run autocad though

Why do you say that Garno? I've got it running on 2 machines - ones an i7 and another is a Core 2 duo ( )

I am due to start a 30 week course in November, one night a week, to learn CAD, It is to be held in Derby college, and have been looking at the recommended specs to run Aotocad and not sure if this would run it smoothly :D

Seriously - not had any issues even on my older machine. Look here for the specs - they aren't as high as you might be led to believe or think. ;)

Guys I just want to say thanks for all the replies. Sorry for the late response . Im reading and trying to keep up with all the advice. Its busy atm and trying to look stuff up on the phone is a nightmare. I have a neighbour putting unix on a usb for me tonight and I'll give that a go. Still looking at various options on builds. Its all a bit perplexing! Get there in the end!
Thanks all. Its much appreciated as always.

If your old, dead machine will boot with Linux, you could start mining bitcoins with it :)

As a gaming machine it might have enough oomph even if it is out of date. Quite why you would want any bitcoins is an entirely different conversation.

Strangely, my neighbour mentioned selling the 580s to bitcoin miners. Or summat. He mentioned architecture.
I smiled as if I understood.
