Bought a 12" 12 tpi steel back tenon saw this morning from car-boot marked
A. Oldham & Sons, Leicester, Cast Steel Warranted.
Anyone have information on them?

I've searched the web and looked through my few reference books but to no avail.

Thanks.

Dr Simon Barley's BSSM gives this info:

Albert Alleston Oldham based at 23 Charnwood Street in 1878; partnered with Charles Henry Kenyon at 34 Church Gate 1883-4; sole trader again 1887-1966 at 34&36 Church Gate (all Leicester). Said to be Saw maker, cutler and joiners' tool dealer until 1925 when '&Sons' was added and he/they became tool merchants.

So, looks like you probably have a post 1925 saw when they were merchants rather than makers.

Thanks Mike.

Well it's a nice saw, still straight, reasonably sharp and cuts quite well. It also has a nicely formed and comfortable handle. I'll give it a fresh sharpen when I have time.

Just come across this thread - just become a member - I went to school in East Leicestershire in the 1970s and my excellent woodwork teacher, a traditional city and guilds craftsman, said it was the only shop in the county he would recommend for buying quality tools. I spent most of my pocket money buying quality tools at the Church gate shop including a branded dovetail saw that I still have today. It was almost certainly made in Sheffield and badged Oldhams. Typical traditional quality ironmonger selling everything and kept quality Record, Maples, tools.
