I've been asked to make some shelves, and a coffee table from this timber, it was the treads off a spiral staircase that was installed in the late 60's

I think it's oak, but I don't work much with hardwoods, so I'm not sure, it machines nice, but it has a very open porous grain to it.

My questions are.......

1. what is it ?

2. It's now 40 mm, I need to join the pieces together with No 20 biscuits, double or single row, or otherwise.

3. What finish, something easy to apply, I'm thinking Danish / Junckers oil

4. Do I need any particular prep or just put the oil on.

I'll try and get some WIP pics on the projects forum., as this is my first one

Cheers

Jed

Definitely Oak.

Oil will bring it back to the golden colour as in your first pic, Fiddes or Osmo hardwax oil should be a little lighter. All easy to apply with no prep other than a nice smooth (planed or sanded) surface. A few coats of Danish will be hardwearing enough for most circumstances and has the benefit of being easy to repair if need be.
