In need of a little help identifying this piece of timber species. Collecting a supply of timber from my sawmill mate, I grabbed this piece from under the woodmizer. Covered in sawdust I assumed it was Ash with some staining. On getting it home and cleaned up an end, it looks like Elm but am not sure. I'm a bit stumped! Any ideas?

Just a guess but top pick looks a lot like a number of pieces of sycamore that I have in my workshop.

It appears to have slight medullary rays. Not many woods have this but I would go for beech

It doesn't really look like Beech, to me anyway. Could it possibly be Beech with a little flaming in it?

I would've said it's Beech as Beau said, but it's hard to tell without a close up of the face grain.
