Went to the council tip when I was at my daughters in Staffordshire when I saw the man in front of us was about to throw away a swivel mirror with two folding wings on it. I asked if I could have it when the council worker said " Sorry sir but you are not allowed to take anything away from the tip" "If the gentleman puts it back in his car and gives it to you outside the gates that would be fine"
No problem mate and out he went and gave it to me outside, and this is the outcome.

Cut the mirror into 6 pieces and with some sapele from a door that a friend had taken from a skip along with some other bits I managed to make six of these.

Finished with 3 coats of danish oil and drawers lined with sticky back velvet. Just need some knobs for the drawers.

No comments yet? That's a very nice piece. It's a real shame at just how much usable stuff gets dumped, and how little vision most people have nowadays compared to 50 years ago doing things just like this.

Agreed by me too!
Far too much good wood goes to landfill. Well done you.

Whenever I go to the tip I stick my head in the timber bins and 30-40% of whats in there is perfectly good reusable timber. Always makes me sad :(

Nice work.
Good the guy at the tip gave you the option of exchange outside the yard, some wouldn't do that.
Whenever I make a reluctant trip to my local tip I desperately try not to look in the skips as I add my stuff to the pile. They are always full of stuff that I'd like to reuse or re-purpose but I've already got a garage full of stuff many people would throw away, just in case it will be useful one day.
I did grab an old metal hacksaw a few months ago, perfectly good tool and it's been useful.
Always worth asking the staff if you can give them a couple of quid for something you could use, most sites have a for sale area so there shouldn't be a problem offering cash for something the staff didn't think to pull out of the bins.

Thank you all for your replies and yes I think far too many good things are thrown away.
Goodness knows what my family will do with all my treasures when I've gone as I hate to dispose of anything that may be useful sometime in the future.
All of the mirrors will be given away to good causes, I've had the pleasure making them and they haven't cost much to make.

Hi Alan,
Job well done.I fully agree that to much reusable stuff is dumped and we cant get the use of it.I was at the dump earlier this year collecting compost when I saw a guy putting a large woodworking vice in the metal skip,I tried to retrieve it but was stoped by Mr JOBSWORTH,the guy who dumped the vice had two others in his van and carried one over to my car and put it on top of the compost, jobsworth was not happy. So after a good clean up I now have a RECORD 52 1/2 fitted to the bench.Wish I could get to some of the wood.

I suspect you'll find Mr Jobsworth had his eye on it, either to have himself or sell...

Knowing a guy who works in our local tip.... you are completely right.
They tell everyone that 'its not aloud' to take the stuff. Where in actual fact, until it hits the skip, it's still the property of the person who's bought it there, to do with what they like.

This guy I know.... and his crowneys .... go through the skips and make fortune on flogging on!

Hi Melinda-dd,
I might have come across this guy that you know,I used to live in PANFIELD LANE.

pETER.

Lol you probably did.... Braintree doesn't change.... still full of pubs, charity shops, and chemists!!

Thankfully I'm near finchingfield now, so go saffron Walden rather than Braintree.... try and avoid it at all costs!
