Making boxes for relatives "special" birthdays seems to have become an expectation as in "Can you just..."
This one for one of my sisters-in-law in Ireland.
Figured sycamore, African blackwood & American black walnut. The lid insert is veneered MDF, I think the veneer is ebony (remnants of the veneer I used on Peter Sefton's laminating & veneering course).

That's a beauty ! The contrasting timbers look superb.

Excellent. Is that the wooden hinge that you have been working on?

Nice clean modern look.
What size? Always handy to have the size to give a better mental image.

What finish did you put on it please ?

Simply a couple of coats of cellulose sanding sealer (de-nibbed with 0000 wire wool) and then some cabinet makers wax.
For items that are likely to get handled a lot I think its the easiest finish as people can always re-wax themselves.

If you're interested in making something similar, the box itself is joined front to sides with "cut down" biscuits (size 0 but reduced in width with a block plane). Recesses cut with a 4mm router bit. The lid parts are joined using 4mm dowels and as the insert if veneered MDF you can glue that in place to give extra strength without worrying about any movement. Base is again veneered MDF (not as ornate) and lined with pig suede (from eBay). As replied above, pivot hinge is 4mm brass rod from B&Q.

I was afraid to ask too many questions so thanks for the extra detail. Don't suppose you've got any pictures of it being made ?
It looks brilliant , I wanna make one !!!!!
Cheers

Smaller than it looked.
I have trouble with smaller boxes, my ham fists get in the way.

Biscuit joints on that small must surely bring it into model makers country.

Very nice indeed!

Could you talk us through how you aligned/tested, and finally inserted the brass dowel pins please? I've been trying to use the same hinge detail myself with mixed results and just can't come up with a foolproof method.

I don't have any WIP pictures but if you give me a while I'll go down to the workshop and try and take a few photos of what I did.
This was the second such box and I did make plans of the first so if you're interested, PM me your address and I'll try and make copies. The first box :

This one was London Plane (Lacewood) with hornbeam and blackwood again but the insert was solid (4mm) London Plane. The tray is sycamore with mitred joints and fitted with keys (sorry can't remember what wood).
JSW - I did have to think a bit about the position of the pivot so as the lid would open and then catch on the back to act as a stop. I do have notes which I'll need to expand so you have a chance of understanding my hieroglyphics.

Thanks Glynne, that would be really helpful, it's the alignment issue I'm most interested in, but any other insights would be appreciated also.

Lovely box, has an art deco look to it. I want one.
Get in the queue
Thanks for the kind offer Glynne. I could probably figure out the arrangement, would have just been interesting to see it in pieces before the glue up.
Did you use normal pva or something a bit more specialist ? The lift out tray is a nice feature.
