Oh I didnt realise u could use pva to end seal blanks dose it have to be neat pva or watered down

Neat PVA but use the cheap builders stuff from Wickes / Builders merchants, it also helps if you have some sawdust, coat the end sealed with PVA with sawdust while it is wet, this helps with the sealing effect and helps prevent cracking.

Hi

It depends on how thick the PVA is in the first place - it should be the consistency of emulsion paint. Apply it with a brush working it into the end grain.

I use emulsion paint and have for some time and I do not thin it.

The advantage of using paint is you can see straight away which logs are sealed and with my memory I need to it

Having said any emulsion would do you may find that latex based emulsion is a better choice if you have a can with some left over from your last bout of home improvements

I use neat cheap builders PVA - seems to work well. One thing though, if you use it to seal the ends of very wet (ie freshly felled) wood it will go mouldy so it's best if you let the ends dry a little before applying. The mould doesn't seem to do any harm, BTW.

I also use cheap PVA but I stick a label on with the PVA then give it a good thick coat. When it's dry it is clear so you can read the label,

regards

Brian

I use cheap PVA and have found on quite a number of occasions it has gone mouldy which in turn I think led to spalting in the wood. In particular I had some Monkey Puzzle that spalted to give an absolutely stunning look. I don't know whether it was caused by the PVA creating mould or not?
