I want to make a saw sharpening vice as my first project. I have been given a modern cot/bed made from beech and have dismantled it to use the wood. In realise that I would have to remove the finish before I can glue up pieces to laminate to get thicker pieces. The finish looks to be some form of varnish which comes off quite easily with a sharpened plane without too much fuss.. I have some really nice pieces of 1.5" x 1.5" that would seem to be ideal ... albeit with a few shallow mortices here and there.
If I fill the holes and apertures left from from the 'bars', etc , sort of like using the apertures as a mortice and filling them with a made tenon cut off flush will this weaken the wood too much to enable me to use it to make the saw vice.
Would be grateful for any advice as to whether this is feasible
