Hi,
I bought the abranet hand sanding kit from the european woodworking show today and once I got home, I was itching to give it a test, so here goes;
Firstly; their claims regarding dust extraction are not exaggerated, it works fantastically well and I couldn't see any traces of dust on my bench.
Secondly; the ergonomics are perfect and it fits into the hand beautifully.
Thirdly; because the dust is being extracted so efficiently there isn't anything to clog the sanding sheet which means it sands very quickly with little effort.
Fourthly; the kit includes 2 sheets of each of the grits from 80 through to 600.
So I thought i'd give it a challenge by sanding some rough saw oak from full on rough (you would normally plane it first when its that rough) all the way through the grits to 600. It took circa 5 mins to work through all the grits and the end result is the smoothest piece of oak I have ever felt! Seriously I never knew oak could feel like silk it is that smooth.
To summarise, for the deal price of £30 its an absolute bargain and produces fantastic results extremely quickly and best of all no dust to clean up :D
I'm very happy I bought it and it is probably one of the best value for money woodworking tools I have ever bought.

P.s. did i mention I like it

Sounds very interesting, any pics please? is it used with an extractor, and how much does the paper work out to cost?
Thanks and regards Rodders

I'll try and take some pics tomorrow, probably be Monday before I get to upload them though I'm afraid.
I haven't looked at the cost of buying just the sanding sheets just yet but judging by how they don't clog up and therefore that the sheets should last much longer than traditional sandpaper. I expect they're more expensive but outweighed by how much longer they last and obviously how much more efficient they are to use.

Me too. As soon as our house is sorted and I've got a new workshop I'll be stocking up on Abranet - brilliant stuff!

I bought some Abranet sheets (70 x 125mm, I think from memory) at 35 pence each last month.

I've seen them on sale at a higher price but, in my view, 35 pence should be your target!

Incidentally, I keep the Abranet sheets in a card index box with dividers separating the various grades; they are a perfect size for a 3x5 inch Card Index Box.

I expect they are even cheaper in bulk!

Yes Abranet hand sanders are fantastic. You don't even need to have a vacuum cleaner on full power for it to work well. I have my cleaner on low suction so it is relavtively quiet when compared to using an random orbital sander.

At the Charnwood Open Day.

I bought for the same price there last year so kept my eyes open and luckily spotted the shelf with them just before I gave up and went home.

On a related point, I was using my Mirka/Abranet hand sander on a new ceiling and initially found it incredibly hard work. Then I realised that the suction adjustment part was closed, resulting in full power of the vauum cleaner 'sticking' the sander to the ceiling! Vaccum power not adjustable on my machine but a twist of the plastic nozzle (where the hose joins the sander's body) resolved the problem. Result = easy, mainly dust free sanding above my head.

Many thanks MC - still same price on Charnwood website - will be ordering some today
Steve

I've considered buying stuff by post from Charnwood in the past and found that the cost of carriage make the price much higher.

Your view may differ

Another +1 here :)

I got a load of Abranet sheets for the hand sander from a woodworking supplies place, didn't have to buy boxes, just say 10 of each and worked out very economical :)
