Has anyone in the UK seen an 1800 watt router motor only for sale? There has just been one released onto the Aussie market and I very much doubt that it is just for our tiny market. That makes me think that it must be available in the UK/Europe.

You can see it here:
http://www.gregmach.com/product/swiss-t ... -machines/

and it fits what would seem to be the duckz nutz of router tables, the Jessem Mastr lift Excel II:

Just love the hand wheel height system.

I dunno what the AUD is worth but I hope it's way less in euros and GBPs, otherwise one is better of getting a Bosch GOF 1600 and plucking the motor out, then you also get the full router deal.

That said I am very interested in being able to buy 230V router motors only, if the price is right.

Unfortunately - nope. Bosch outsmarted themselves. We were on to the Bosch over here when it was first released here about a year ago. Quite excited we were.

However, one of the guys who bought one is a sparkie and there is a system that prevents the motor from working when removed from the base, and it's not just a switch - some kind of resistor that runs on rails. The details are here but you won't see the pics if you're not a member (I don't think):

In any case, the GOF 1600 is a similar price plus any applicable workaround, so......

... and there you are in the home of the wonderful Tritons an you're buying Bosch

I've got a Triton under-table now Roger, but i want something to fit into a router lift, and they mostly will only accept motor-only.

Anyway, two things: China is now the home of Triton, and from what i have read the chances of getting a dud these days seem to be rapidly increasing. Judging by the number of complaints on the forum, it seems to me that since I bought mine four years ago the company has been sold yet again and the QC has gone down the Chinese path. Dunno who owns them now - too hard to keep up with.

Not sure what collet sizes you can get, but I imagine you can get 1/2 and 1/4".

Yes, we pretty thoroughly investigated spindle motors. They seem to be too long or too fat or too skinny (or all three :). Even looked at three phase jobbies with a VFD (cost gets a bit crazy). The idea of a water cooled one looks good at face value, but I really don't fancy water and sparks too close together - particularly with Chinese QC involved.....

Such a shame they've gone the China route like so much else.

I've had my Tritons quite a while and they've not given me any problems. I find the built-in lift works fine for me and it's a joy to change cutters with the huge plunge length lifting it so high and accessible above the table.

Indeed.

Mine has been good as well.

I find the lift mechanism "okay" but a little coarse - there are times when the lifting goes "chunk" and a radical downwards movement is the result - that's what appeals so much about the hand wheel mechanism of the Jessem table - fitted with with an electronic height gauge I think it would be unbeatable. Then, if you wish, you can add the Jessem Mitre Slide which looks like an excellent, well made sturdy piece of kit:

as does the fence, along with the other bits and pieces:

At the end of the day, the new motor only that has been released would be the most satisfactory solution by far, provided it isn't Chinese noisy (highly likely) and is reasonable build quality (hmmmm).

Really, I'm just trying to find a source that doesn't have the unofficial "Australia Tax". This Tax is determined by whatever the vendor thinks they can gouge us for. I believe they usually use dice to determine it (keep rolling until they show +6). Realistically, a motor only should be somewhere around $200 given it's simplicity. However, because it's the only one on the market there is no competition and the AT comes well and truly into play.

Good work Bill ! Thanks very much for your efforts there. They have exclusive Euro rights on it. The price inc VAT is actually more than here (somehow) but pre-VAT is $392, so with shipping will sadly be more than here.

Anyway, a good sleuth job. They talk about developing it with MLCS, and so here it is here shown in a lift:
http://www.mlcswoodworking.com/shopsite ... -lift.html

and if you scroll down you can see the 110 volt motor only sells for just USD220. (AUD275). That's what I mean about the "Australia Tax" but it seems to have caught on in Norway.....

Well Norway is one of the most expensive countries on earth. It's not a place I'd look to for good deals.

True, but when it comes to woodworking prices the Aussies are KING. Have a look at our Festool prices:
http://www.festool.com.au/

(particularly accessories). A$ is about €0.70, and those prices only include a 10% GST (VAT)

The prices are so high that the Kapex price didn't change for about 5 years, until last year. While there have been price rises every year everywhere else some of the Aussie prices have actually been falling (again, accessories).

Rant off!

I also note that some of the lifts referenced on this thread do not mention a height lock, I have found this essential if carrying out repeat routing over long lengths of timber, as with anything mechanical vibration can induce a certain amount of creep, especially when using large diameter panel raising bits.

Love the above table speed adjustment accessory, may have to get one.

Peter Sefton (Woodworker's Workshop) sells his own "AUK" version, with various upgrades from the originals. They _look_ very similar, but aren't. He's also selling a variant with a remote speed control (the proto has it neatly built into the NVR enclosure). He also has both metric and imperial collets for them.

As for stuff vibrating loose, I have run-up one of those motors just sitting on a workmate - it was very smooth (and Peter's ones have better bearings than the one I was playing with). The router lifts he has are really solid too - I'd expect they don't shift around a great deal, although I do take your point about the thumps from a large cutter, such as a big panel raiser.
