    Scotch Brite Grey

I often see Americans using Scotch Brite pan scourers as a "sanding option". I tried this but the ones I used were green and some colour transferred to the wood! I then noticed that one of the Americans was talking about grey Scotch Brite which, I guess, would not be such a problem? I can't find...

Cabinet door painting: which edge first?

I am painting some cabinet doors and always have a problem. I've done all the prep, primer, etc. I tend to paint the backs and let them dry then I paint the front and the edges. The problem is that there is always a little over-run from the edges to the back no matter how careful I am. I wipe...

    Cabinet door gap consistency

I am about to fit H-hinges to doors that fit inside the face frame of a cabinet and sit flush with the frame. The gap around the door has to be consistent all round or it will be noticeable. With the best will in the world, hinges are never 100% stable and tend to sag under weight. So, I can...

    Flush cabinet doors

Does anyone know of a good video to show me how to fit a flush door in a cabinet please? Cheers.

    Scroll Saw Book

Hi, I want to buy a scroll saw book for a woodworker who is new to scroll saws but an accomplished turner and therefore not a total "woodworking beginner". Any recommendations please? Thanks

    Flush it and catch it

On the built-in cabinet I'm currently approaching there will be two flush doors with "H" hinges. All good. However, I've just realised that the magnetic catches I have (normal type) will not work because they need to be screwed to the top of a cabinet. As the doors are flush and in the face of...

    Flat as a pancake

I bought a rather expensive Sjoberg workbench two years ago. As I put in the last screw (self-assembly) I noticed a label saying that it had been stored in an environment of 40% humidity! Here in Cornwall the only place humidity is ever that low is in a pasty oven! Sure enough, the doors now...

Bench top mortiser and pillar drill

Is there such a thing as a combined bench top mortiser and pillar drill? Oooooh, I hope so! :P

    Hidden cupboard, crouching worktop

I want to fit a worktop in an alcove, three sides. The side walls are not square and the rear wall is a very knobbly granite wall: it's a converted barn. How do I do this? I can get the worktop into the alcove to scribe the back! Argh.

    Compost Cost

SWIMBO tells me that I want to make compostbins like Monty Don has. Each will be about a five foot cube with gaps between the boards ... I guess. My question is, where can I get loads of cheap wood of a low quality that will keep the cost down? Cheers.

    SWMBO unsupported

She Who Must Be Obeyed has a potting shed. She want a work surface in there for potting plants, etc. so it will get rough use and be pretty wet. The surface has to fit in an alcove 1410mm wide and needs to be 600mm deep. She wants it unsupported at the front so it will only have battens at the...

    Postman Pat

I've returnrd an item that was defective to an online supplier. They have refunded the cost of the item but not the return post that I had to pay. What do people normally do?

    Shim sham

So, I have one of those door cutting sets and habe used it for the first time. The scribe and profile are very neat but a bit loose. He instructions say to use the supplied shims to alter the fit but they don't say how! Argh! Any help please? Cheers.

Out of the stone age - thick as a plank

OK. I've just about had enough! I spent all day Sunday prepping, by hand, some lovely beech for a cabinet door only to c*ck it up at the last minute! Now I want a planner/thicknesser. I only have about £500 and very little space. Would it be best to get a combined one or are separates better...

    Wibbly fence

I have been given a small table saw (my first ever) that works pretty well except for the fence. It's a bit wibbly so when I rip something a bit long, the fence moves outward at its end giving a "non-square" cut. Can anyone recommend a replacement fence please? I saw one in Axminster they do...

    254 and counting

I have been given a table saw! Only a cheap one though. Anyway, it has a blade 254 mm x 2.4 mm. Do I have to get exactly the same size or is a 250 mm or 2.1 mm one ok? Cheers.

    Top o' the Morning!

What is the best top for a router table? I have an outside, unheated shed as my workshop. I fancy MDF as the aluminium one I have now marks the wood and the grooves mean that smaller pieces can rock about. However, MDF is prone to the damp. Hmmm.

    Barbarians at the gate

We have need of a "field gate"between our garden and ... a field. SWMBO has the idea that a "posh" one would be best, not some old thing! What is the best wood for it to be made from? It's only going to be 5 feet wide and about 3 feet 6 inches high. Cheers.

Leigh super FMT + Trend T11

So, I really fancy the Leigh jig and also I need a new router. Does anyone have this combination? What does anybody think? BTW, is a T11EK the same as a T11?

    Shoulder to cry on

Just had a crazy, destructive episode where I destroyed a tenon and its rail. The problem was the maddening shoulder to and fro. One should was fine, the other had a bit of a gap. So, I shortened the fine one to match the other. I don't know how but then the situation was reversed! You can...
