    Hardwood edge banding.

I have used heat to glue on edge banding for years. No problems, but every now and again it bubbles up where the glue hasn’t quite grabbed. This is especially noticeable when you paint. I have also made my own edge banding, glued and clamped, much more reliable results if a little more work...

    BIG ring latch

Hi one and all. I am looking for a big ring latch for some big Oak garden gates. Ideally a smooth (not twisted) ring of about 100mm across. Tried all the usual suspects, but alas nothing. Any suggestions where I might find such a thing? See attached (if it works) Cheers Graeme

Rubino wood filler - where can I get it?

Has anyone heard of Rubino wood filler, I was given a tube by a guy who layed some oak flooring for us a couple of years ago and its great for small filling jobs like nail holes and the like. It comes in a small tube and a little goes a long way. But there is not much left in the tube, does...

Which wood to use for planters

Hi one and all, Happy New Year!!! I have been thinking about making some planters for myself, recreational carpentry, instead of doing eveything for everyone else. I got to thinking about wood and thought I would throw the subject open to the collective knowledge and guidance. Any suggestions...

    T Hinges and architrave

Does anyone have any good ideas about how to accommodated T hinges and architrave? May be there is a proper way that I haven't learnt yet. The common ways seem to be start and stop the architrave, but that looks not so good especially when the T part of the hinge is not as wide as the...

Weather seal on new oak door

Has anyone used Aquamac 63 Weather Seal from Ternd/Axminster? I am looking for something that I can cut into the new frame that I am making that will work well and look good. Not sure about the White or Bronze colour on the Trend/Axminster one.

    Solid brass screws source?

I live nearby and popped into J Shiner & Sons Ltd in Seaford, East Sussex today. They only moved there in April, hence not knowing they were there. They seemed friendly, have plenty of stock of stuff for cabinet makers and architectural lines as well. Would be worth trying out IMHO. Graeme

    farrow and ball paint

I spray with it all the time. If you ring the F&B support line, they say its fine to. Just do the usual things that you do with thinning i.e. water for estate eggshell. I have to say I like F&B paints. I have only ever had one problem, but it was a strange paint, not the one you mentioned.

    Business Insurance

I went to NFU to get a tools cover on my workshop on a local farm. For about £15K of tools (no materials) it was £450.00/pa which seemed expensive, but the real kicker was that they wanted to inspect my workshop and spray room, which I know is not up to regs, but for the small amount of spraying...

    Osmo Polyx/Park Lane

Thanks. I think I got onto the US web site, they have different names, but its a UV protection satin finish that I am after. I love Osmo for internal, so will probably go for it on this door. Certainly a couple of retailer have recommended it, so along with your endorsement sounds like a no-brainer!

    Osmo Polyx/Park Lane

Hi, Does anyone have any experience of using Osmo on exterior oak doors. I would like to use it on a new oak door and frame I am making for somebody. The door gets a good bit of sunshine, a bit protected from the rain. Looking on Osmo's web site there four that they recommend for exterior use...

    Oak front door, softwood frame

Good idea and thanks. Problem is that the door is set well back in a thick wall from the front and the sides have heafty bits of flint in the way, so the fillers would be big, but it is an option.

    Oak front door, softwood frame

Hi All, I would appreciate some advise on a project that may come up. The client wants a nice new oak FLB front door, no probs there. Its an old property and the existing pine door frame is serviceable but not pretty. I had intended to make a new oak frame to match and fit in place...
